PRESS RELEASE

End Government's nuclear hypocrisy

Tony Blair appears neither willing to allow true parliamentary democracy or to take heed of the people of Britain who are still firmly against war on Iraq.

The dossier of evidence confirms CND's belief that it is imperative for the UN weapons inspectors to return to Iraq. As the document itself spells out, it is impossible to verify compliance with UN resolution without intrusive inspection.

War on Iraq would preclude UNSCOM inspections, would break the UN charter and hence undermine the United Nations itself, would create as yet unknown devastation throughout a fragile Middle East and would kill yet thousands more Iraqi civilians.

Military action is not the way to bring about disarmament of nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction.

UN resolutions and International Treaties must be adhered to by all nations who possess weapons of mass destruction not just Iraq

Carol Naughton, Chair of CND, said, "Great play is being made of the reliance Saddam Hussein puts on WMD and his willingness to use them. A sentiment shared by our own government, demonstrated by the Secretary of State for Defence, Geoff Hoon's recent statement of his willingness to use UK nuclear weapons against Iraq.

The UK would be better placed on the moral high ground if it was to comply with its own commitments to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty."

CND calls on all those opposed to war on Iraq to support the demonstration in London on Saturday 28th September.
