PRESS RELEASE
CND attacked
For immediate release: 21 July 2003
A small package marked ‘SARS EPIDEMIC’ was placed outside
the offices of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) today. CND were
extremely alarmed by the package and immediately notified the police.
After thorough investigation the police concluded the package was a ‘malicious
communication’.
The package was an attempt to attack and intimidate CND and its staff
and undermine the work it is doing in exposing the government’s
illegal war on Iraq.
Over the years CND has received numerous slurs and threats against it.
CND has been the subject of misinformation and attempts to undermine the
hard work it is doing to bring about peace. It’s no co-incidence
that the last time CND was particularly subject to intimidation was in
the 1980s when CND was leading mass campaigning against cruise missiles.
A CND spokesperson said, “it is clear that there are forces at
large who are trying to threaten, discredit and undermine CND. The attacks
have backfired, and strengthened CND’s resolve to bring about the
elimination of weapons of mass destruction.”
Following the tragic events of the weekend Carol Naughton CND Chair said
“Tony Blair was quick to call an inquiry following the tragic death
of Dr. David Kelly but refuses to call an independent inquiry into the
dreadful, terrible and needless deaths of thousands of Iraqis. How can
it be that we are in a situation where a Labour government refuses to
call an independent inquiry following a war yet the Thatcher government
had an independent inquiry following the Falklands War. The war was supposed
to be about justice, democracy and the abolition of weapons of mass destruction,
yet the government have been shown wanting on all of these issues.”
