PRESS RELEASE Scrap Trident Demonstration in PlymouthSaturday 12 October 2002 Activists from across the UK will be gathering in Plymouth on 12 October to protest against the refit of Trident nuclear submarines in the Devonport Dockyard. This demonstration has been carefully planned by Patrick van Den Bulck on behalf of CND in co-ordination with local activists in the Nuclear Free Coalition. "We started protesting against Trident while it was under construction in the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard in Cumbria. Scottish CND and Trident Ploughshares have focused a great deal of attention on Trident at its operational base at Faslane in Scotland. Now we intend to carry our opposition to Trident to Devonport," said CND Chair Carol Naughton. Protesters will gather on Plymouth Hoe from 12 noon. They will leave at 13.00 hrs for a march through Plymouth to Albert Gate, Devonport Dockyard. The Chair of CND will read a statement of protest to the demonstrators who will sit down for 20/30 minutes. The statement will then be handed in, addressed to the MoD. The march will move off to Devonport Park where national and local speakers will address the rally. Several local bands have indicated their interest in playing at the rally. "There is a great deal of talk about Weapons of Mass Destruction (WDM), international law and outlaw regimes at the moment," said Patrick van Den Bulck. "Trident is Mr Blair's very own WMD and it is past time he stood by his international obligations and scrapped all four submarines."
