PRESS RELEASE

CND Chair arrested at the Big Blockade, Faslane

For immediate use: 11 February 2002

CND Chair Carol Naughton has this morning been arrested at the blockade of the Faslane nuclear submarine base on the River Clyde and taken to Clyde Bank police station. Once again she is likely to be charged with breach of the peace for sitting in the road and declining to move away.

Carol was arrested at the blockade last year and charged with breach of the peace for sitting in the road in front of the access gate into Faslane. At her trial on 20 September, just after her election as Chair CND,
Carol defended herself and said:

"Whatever I did was peaceful and was done to prevent a crime against humanity. As a human being I cannot stand by and do nothing. Trident is illegal under international law."

Carol co-signed a letter to the Chief Constable which was handed into Strathclyde Police on Thursday 7 February which urged a reduced police presence at the blockade and no arrests for merely protesting against Trident. It is hoped that the cost of policing the demonstration can be reduced. Relations between police and protesters have been cordial in the past.

"As Chair of British CND and a Scot myself, I am very aware of the importance of supporting these actions to remind the public what is being done in their name behind the razor wire fences at Faslane. I have great admiration for the work of Trident Ploughshares and Scottish CND in organising these events," said Ms Naughton.
