PRESS RELEASE
CND Condemns Blair's Cry for More War; Calls for Policies of Peace and
Justice
11 January 2007: for immediate release
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament unequivocally condemned today’s
speech by Tony Blair in which he called for Britain to continue on its
current path as a 'warfighting' nation.
Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, denounced
Blair’s speech as 'another milestone in the prime minister's political
and moral degeneration'. Blair's 'solution' for the problem of international
terrorism, she said, 'has already claimed the lives of hundreds of
thousands of Iraqis and many British troops, as well as squandering billions
of pounds on an illegal war in Iraq. He now proposes to continue this
disastrous policy of war in addition to spending untold billions on a
replacement for Trident.’
She continued, ‘The PM’s latest messianic vision of war upon
war - and the consequences that it will bring - is a disaster for
the British people and our armed forces, and worst of all, for those peoples
upon whom war will be waged. He seems determined to compound the failures
and disasters caused by his foreign policy by escalating his military
interventionism. But the world can see that new policies are called
for - policies of peace, justice and equality which will begin to undo
the terrible damage, not only of interventionism over the last few years,
but of centuries of British intervention and unequal relations between
countries and peoples.’
CND, the Stop the War Coalition, and the British Muslim Initiative are
organising a national demonstration on Saturday 24th February, calling
for ‘No Trident’ and ‘Troops Home from Iraq.’
It is expected to be Britain’s largest anti-nuclear demonstration
in decades.
