PRESS RELEASE National demonstration at RAF Lakenheath to call for removal of US nuclear weapons29 September 2006: for immediate release Hundreds of demonstrators from around the UK will converge on RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk on Sunday 1st October to demand the removal of over 100 American nuclear weapons on the base. The weapons are kept at Lakenheath under Britain’s commitment to NATO. Hundreds of US nuclear weapons are kept on bases throughout Europe as part of NATO’s ‘security’ strategy. The event is part of a Europe-wide action against the storage of NATO nuclear weapons in Europe. Sunday’s event will include music, theatre, and political cabaret by the Theatre of War group, which famously toppled a statue of George W Bush in Trafalgar Square during his 2003 visit to London. Speeches at the event will come from CND vice-presidents Bruce Kent and Janet Bloomfield, Jeremy Corbyn MP, and CND chair Kate Hudson. Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said, “NATO is a cold war relic which should have been disbanded when the Warsaw Pact was dissolved. It is a nuclear-armed organisation with a first strike policy which is a dangerous provocation in today’s world. US nuclear weapons, under the guise of NATO, have no place in Britain, and their location here and in other European countries contravenes the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We demand the removal of US nukes from Britain.” end 1. For further information and interviews please contact Rick Wayman,
