PRESS RELEASE

CND Urges Good Faith Response to Iran's Call for Talks

22 August 2006: for immediate release

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today welcomed Iran’s call for ‘serious talks’ with the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany over its controversial nuclear programme and urged those countries to respond to the call in good faith.

Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said, “It is important that Britain and its negotiating partners take this opportunity for diplomacy seriously. While there is as yet no evidence that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons programme, it is a positive sign that they are willing to negotiate with other nations. While these leading nations seek to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, they should also begin the complete disarmament of their own vast arsenals of nuclear weapons as required by the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, leading to a world free from weapons of mass destruction.”
