Introduction Currently, eight countries have nuclear weapons:United States United Kingdom Russia France and China– these are the five official nuclear weapons states – they signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), India Pakistan and Israel who are unofficial nuclear weapons states because they have not signed the NPT and their nuclear programmes are not recognised in the NPT.
These countries have carried out nuclear tests all around the world since 1945, but nuclear weapons have only been used twice in war: in 1945, the US used two nuclear bombs against Japan. One was dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th of August, the other one destroyed Nagasaki three days later.
