Missile Defence: the new threat Click here
to read or order a copy of the CND report on Space Weapons -'Fighting
for Space' That's the spin. The reality is that Missile Defence is a system designed for control and domination. The system, if it works, will increase the ability to launch pre-emptive strikes. That ability could make war-fighting more common and will reinforce the current US administration's belief in pre-emptive wars. The threat of more common pre-emptive US Strikes is already provoking nuclear proliferation in some of the main nuclear states (eg China) and could lead to further proliferation. Furthermore, the US plans to incorporate space-based weapons in to the Missile Defence system. These weapons may be able to strike at ICBMs as they travel outside the atmosphere but they will also be able to strike at enemy satellites and other space assets. Missile Defence then, threatens to lead to the first ever deployment of space weapons and that may very well provoke a space arms race alongside the ground-based nuclear proliferations. When you look at the stars at night you'll be looking at a battlefield. States such as Canada, Russia, China and some European states are openly opposed to space weapons and are trying to develop a Treaty to ban them, but the US vetoes all attempts and the UK has so far played no useful role in opposing them. The US withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in order to develop Missile Defence. Deploying space weapons tests the very fabric of the Outer Space Treaty too. The UK is integral to US Missile Defence plans. With the UK hosting two military bases essential to the system - Menwith Hill and Fylingdales in North Yorkshire - we are a vital cog in the wheel. That means we can also make our voices heard. Phase One of the system is due to come online this summer, and now is the time to raise our voices even louder. CND opposes this awesome new war-fighting system and any deployment of space weapons. CND believes the UK and US governments should concentrate on peaceful, multilateral initiatives for dealing with threats – the only true route to peace, security and nuclear disarmament.
