New petitionCND has jointly launched a new 'No Trident Replacement, Yes to a Nuclear
Weapons Convention' petition
with Medact as part of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons
(ICAN). The campaign was launched at the Non-Proliferation Treaty PrepCom in Vienna this year by doctors and medical professionals working in 60 countries, joining with mayors, civil society groups and prominent persons to demand a Nuclear Weapons Convention. Read more>> Massive rebellion against Trident Replacement - a first step towards nuclear abolitionOn 14th March, the government suffered its biggest rebellion on domestic policy since Labour came to power in 1997. Only the Iraq war rebellion has been greater. 161 MPs voted against the government's motion calling for a replacement to go ahead, and 167 voted for an amendment stating that the case for Trident replacement has not been proven. CND Chair Kate Hudson said, 'This scale of opposition is extremely significant. The website www.bigtridentdebate.org.uk contains a statement calling for a full debate which individuals and organisations are encouraged to sign. Join the debate! Poll shows 64% support Convention banning all nuclear weaponsA January 2007 YouGov poll shows that 64% of the British public want the government to support a Convention banning all nuclear weapons. A draft Nuclear Weapons Convention is already lodged with the United Nations. Click here for petition calling for the Convention. Overwhelming majority favour Parliamentary vote on Trident replacementA June 2006 ICM poll shows that 81% of the British public believe that a decision on Trident replacement should be made by a vote in Parliament, not by the Prime Minister alone. Poll shows big jump in opposition to Trident ReplacementA July 2006 ICM poll shows that opposition to Trident Replacement has increased from 54% last autumn to 59%. The results were based on CND asking an identical question to that asked by Greenpeace last September. No Trident Replacement petition handed in to Prime MinisterThe petition was handed in to 10 Downing Street on 4th August, just before the 61st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Over 53,000 signatures were handed in by CND Chair Kate Hudson, Vice-Presidents Bruce Kent, Air-Commodore Alistair Mackie, Canon Paul Oestreicher and Walter Wolfgang and Labour CND Secretary Carol Turner. TUC adopts strong position against Trident ReplacementCND welcomes the vote at the Trades Union Congress conference which strongly opposes a replacement for Trident, Britain’s nuclear weapons system.
