The Iraq war
Military Families against the War
Military Families have launched a petition demanding a full public
inquiry into the Iraq war. Sign the petition here.
Count the casualties campaign
We urge you to email Jack Straw to ask the government to commission
a comprehensive, independent inquiry to determine how many Iraqis
have died or been injured since the 2003 invasion. You can do so
by going to: http://www.countthecasualties.org.uk/
CND maintains the belief that war is an ineffective way to deal
with weapons of mass destruction. We fully support disarmament of
all nations through peaceful diplomacy. The concerted strengthening
of international weapons treaties and implementation of a rigid
weapons inspections programme over a realistic timeline would have
been a much more effective way of disarming Iraq and preventing
the future spread of weapons of mass destruction, without grave
humanitarian consequences.
The US-UK led war on Iraq has led to the build up of a massive humanitarian
crisis. CND still believes that the war was immoral and illegal.

Butler
Report: CND calls for political accountability
Peace campaigners welcomed the Butler
Report as a 'step in the right direction.' They cautioned, however
that until there was real political accountability for the decision
to go to war then the British people were being sold short.. More

Iraq and the Fairford Five
The Fairford Five have failed to overturn a decision to
prevent them using the illegality of the war as a defence in their
forthcoming trials. The Appeal Court Judges ruled that is was “not
necessary” to consider the legality of the war in Iraq for
the accused to have a defence in law. However the judges did not
rule on whether secondary war crimes could be considered in the
trial. For the defendants' reaction click here.

Iraq war crimes - 'a case to answer' says
tribunal
The first steps on this initiative were taken in January 2003,
before the war had even started. CND joined a coalition of law professors
and leading NGO’s to serve notice on Blair, Hoon and Straw
that they would be investigated by the ICC Prosecutor if the UK
breaches International Humanitarian Law (IHL) during any proposed
use of force against Iraq. The notice detailed how and why the
breaches
of IHL could occur and was served on the Prime Minister during
filming for the Channel 4 programme 'Mark Thomas…Weapons Inspector'.
Leading international law
experts brought together by Peacerights, a UK based NGO, have
submitted a report which recommends that the UK government should
be investigated for war crimes in Iraq (see the Executive
Summary). The full report
has been sent to the ICC for consideration. Further evidence from
recent events during the occupation of Iraq is also being compiled.
The Attorney General was also asked to investigate, but unsurprisingly
rejected the proposal. The tribunal was partly financed by the White
Ribbon Campaign, which many CND activists contributed to. More
