The Commons vote on replacing Trident on the 14th March 2007 showed the impact of an effective Parliamentary lobbying campaign by CND supporters. Despite the government winning the vote with Conservative support, it suffered its biggest rebellion on domestic policy since Labour came to power in 1997. Only the Iraq war rebellion has been greater.

Parliamentary CND is a cross-party group of MPs who regularly raise our campaigning priorities but need CND supporters to maintain pressure on their own MPs to ensure the nuclear weapons debate stays on top of their agenda.

CND needs its supporters to regularly contact their MPs, whether through emails or letters, attending local surgeries, or through stories in local newspapers.

Make sure your MP signs these Early Day Motions

An EDM is a short statement of facts, beliefs or opinion written by an MP asking the government to take a position on a matter of policy, practice or procedure. The more MPs sign an EDM, the more effective it is in attracting press interest and stimulating public opinion.

CND is currently urging MPs to sign the following EDMs but the more constituents that ask them to sign, the more likely it is that they will do so.

EDM 366: US Missile Defence

That this House notes the concern across Europe, including the UK, at the Bush Administration's plans to install further missile defence bases on the continent; welcomes the support for nuclear disarmament initiatives from Barack Obama; further notes that Mr Obama has made no commitment to missile defence until the technology is proved to be workable; further notes that this House has not had a debate on missile defence since January 2003; and calls on the Government to scrutinise US missile defence deployment plans in the UK and their implications for UK and European security as a whole.

EDM 660: Parliamentary Scrutiny of Trident Replacement

That this House recalls the commitment given during the parliamentary debate on the prospective programme for the replacement of the Trident system on 14 March 2007, Official Report, column 309, by the then Foreign Secretary, the right hon. Member for Derby South, that the Government would ensure regular reports to Parliament as the programme proceeds; contrasts this with the answer given by the Permanent Under Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, Sir Bill Jeffrey, in oral evidence to the Public Accounts Committee on 19 November 2008, when it was highlighted that the Ministry of Defence had announced its intention to conclude the Initial Gate decision in September 2009, during the parliamentary recess, that these would normally be decisions taken by Ministers; notes that the Secretary of State for Defence said in a written Answer on 10 December 2008, Official Report, column 341W, that decisions will be taken on the Initial Gate in autumn 2009 and that the Government proposed to update Parliament on progress after Initial Gate; believes this undermines the commitment made to Parliament by the Foreign Secretary in March 2007; and requests that the Initial Gate decision be delayed until Parliament is in session and can be presented with the report for scrutiny.
