I am writing to make you aware of the hunger strike that is taking place in Prague, in protest at the Czech government's continuing negotiations with the US to build a Missile Defence radar near the city. A number of leading political and cultural figures, including a Social Democrat senator and a Green MP, have now joined the hunger strike which is organised on a 'chain' basis, with people participating for 24 hour slots.
	US Missile Defence bases in the UK, the Czech Republic and Poland put Europe on the front line in future US wars. They are essential to any US war plans and any future US enemy will attempt to destroy them. I am concerned that continued development of the system will provoke a new Cold War with Russia. Opinion polls show majority opposition to the system in all three countries.
	I would also like to make you aware of one of the demands of the hunger strikers, that the European Union reach an agreed position on the installation of the US Missile Defence system in Europe. 
	With that in mind I would urge you to petition the Council for a plenary debate in the European Parliament on the role of US Missile Defence in Europe. I would urge you as a British MEP to consider the role that Britain has played in already allowing two bases, Fylingdales and Menwith Hill, to be allocated to this system - without consultation with other member states. I hope that you personally will contribute to any such debate.
