Trade unions are vital to CND's campaign against the replacement of Trident and our long standing commitment to achieving the global abolition of nuclear weapons.
Today CND has national affiliations from UNISON, CWU, RMT, FBU, TSSA, ASLEF, NUM and UNITY.
Other unions, including the UNITE sections TGWU and AMICUS, and also UCATT, the NUT and the NUJ have voted to oppose the replacement of Trident.
CND encourages direct affiliations from local branches, regional and national trade unions and trades union councils.
Affiliated trade unions receive up-to-date mailings and information, as well as the right to send delegates to CND's annual conference and AGM

TUC Congress 2006 and Defence Diversification
TUC Congress in 2006 debated a resolution moved by RMT general secretary Bob Crow declaring opposition to the replacement of Trident.
Following a passionate debate, the resolution was carried overwhelmingly. During the debate a number of unions declared their support for the resolution in principle but raised concerns with the need to ensure continued employment for workforces currently employed in areas of the nuclear weapons industry.
In response CND commissioned a piece of research - generously funded by UNISON - by Steve Schofield entitled Trident and Employment to outline the case for nuclear disarmament and the transfer of the sector's skilled staff into new and growing industries.
Trade union support in the past
Since the establishment of the Campaign in 1958, trade unions have been at the forefront of spreading our message. As early as 1960 the Transport and General Workers' Union took a stance in favour of disarmament and in 1961 wont the position at the Labour Party Conference.
As in the 1960s, many trade union branches sent their banners on CND demonstrations in the 1980s, as well as sending donations and delegations to peace camps at bases such as Greenham Common and Molesworth.
More recently there has been an upsurge in support for CND once again.
