4.jpg Once the US has gained enough data on the trajectory of the incoming missile (assuming it has not ejected a number of independent warheads), it will fire an "interceptor missile" at it. Using the data on the missile trajectory, they plan to hit the incoming missile while it is in mid-course phase. At later stages of development, the US hopes to be able to strike at missiles in their early boost phase too - hence solving the difficult multiple warhead and decoy problem. Interceptor missile are based at Vandenberg in California and Fort Greely, Alaska. Further missiles are proposed to be installed in Poland, with some suggestions that they may even be installed in the UK at some point in the future.
