Global Summit for a Nuclear Weapon-Free World report |

As part of the events to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, CND hosted a Global Summit for a Nuclear Weapon-Free World at London's City Hall on the 16th and 17th of February 2008. Speakers ranged from the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Sergio Duarte, to Bianca Jagger, Chair of the World Future Council and Goodwill Ambassador for the Council of Europe, and leading activists from Israel, India, Pakistan, the US, Japan and elsewhere.
The Summit was opened by Mayor Ken Livingstone and included both activist and expert 'streams', with the former discussing how popular movements can help create the conditions for nuclear abolition, and the latter looking at the technical requirements to build a Nuclear Weapons Convention .
The Summit also heard from a survivor of the Hiroshima atom bomb, Mikiso Iwasa, who aged 16 lost both his mother and sister. Mikiso vividly described the utter devastation of the city, seen from his home only 1200 meters from the ground zero.
Speeches to the summit:
Bianca Jagger, Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador & Chair of the World Future Council
Sergio Duarte, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, United Nations
Hiroshi Taka, Secretary General, Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (GENSUIKYO)
Ma Wenpu, Executive Vice President of the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament
Pierre Villard [French version], co-president of Le Mouvement de la Paix (France)
For more details, see our recent press release on the Summit.
CND would like to thank the Nuclear Education Trust, the Joseph
Rowntree Charitable Trust and the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust
