2008 is the 50th anniversary of CND, with many events being held to mark this.

cnd50.jpg The weekend of 16-17th February marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of CND. To celebrate this CND hosted a Global Summit for a Nuclear Weapon Free World at London's City Hall. Speakers ranged from the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Sergio Duarte, to Bianca Jagger, Chair of the World Future Council and Goodwill Ambassador for the Council of Europe, and leading activists from Israel, India, Pakistan, the US, Japan and elsewhere.

The Summit will also heard from a survivor from the Hiroshima atom bomb and was opened by Mayor Ken Livingstone. For more details, see the report on the Summit.

Aldermaston demo posterEaster Monday saw a lively demonstration against the development of nuclear weapons at the heart of Britain's nuclear weapons programme - the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston. Five thousand joined the protest which, on the anniversary of the arrival of the first Aldermaston march, celebrated 50 years of anti-nuclear protest in Britain.
