Demonstration and Candle-lit Vigil at South Korean Embassy

Demonstration and Candle-lit Vigil in Solidarity with Gangjeong Village, Jeju Island, South Korea
9th May
2-5pm

Outside the Republic of Korea Embassy
60 Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6AJ

Please come and join the demonstration outside the South Korean Embassy and demand a halt to the building of a naval base that will be used by the US in their attempt to surround and control China. The villagers of Gangjeong are resisting the destruction of their beautiful,
fragile, coastal environment and sacred places - they want Jeju to remain an Island of Peace and to prevent this military base from being built.

The villagers need the strong and visible support of the international community.

Please bring supporters, banners, songs, instruments and protest letters to hand in to the Embassy.

Vigil in Support of Jeju Island

Tuesday March 13th
Vigil in support of Jeju Island outside the Korean Embassy from 10am - 6pm.

60 Buckingham Gate
Westminster
London
SW1E 6AJ

Phone contact for the vigil: 0779151627

There has been ongoing nonviolent direct action at the naval base construction site on Jeju Island, Korea. On Friday 9th March around 30 people broke through the fence surrounding the construction site where blasting of the sacred Gureombi rocks has already begun. The group included many Catholic priests as well as UK Trident Ploughshares activist Angie Zelter.

The USA is backing the Korean Navy in building this naval base because they want to use it to berth their Aegis missile defence ships and nuclear aircraft carriers to form a ring of American bases around China. The people of Jeju Island which is known as the "Peace Island" do not want to be part of this military escalation.

Rock Solid? Expo - Kendal Museum: 24 March - 16 June

Rock Solid? Expo - Kendal Museum
24th March to 16th June 2012

Kendal Museum will be holding an exhibition of specially created artworks based on Lakeland Geology. Lakeland geology is of intense interest as it is being considered for the geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste. Associated with the exhibition will be a series of lectures and workshops examining this topic.

In Lakeland's leaky geology, a huge mine 1000m deep x 26km square, to contain man's most long lasting ‘legacy’...

Is it possible? Is it ethical?
How will we tell future generations?
    Should we make more waste?

Guest Artists
Julian Cooper: one of the UK’s leading mountain painters
Josephina de Vasconcellos: sculptor and supporter of CORE (Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment)

Other artists taking part in the exhibition include: Ian Walton, Pam Williamson, Deborah Nicholls, Marianne Birkby, Tony Riley, Geoff Read, Irene Sanderson, Stew Simpson and more. The works take inspiration from Cumbria’s wonderfully diverse geological heritage and the plan to try to use that geology to contain man’s most long lasting legacy.

A series of events are taking place alongside the exhibition:

Saturday 10th March
Walk to the top of Scafell to experience the scale of 1000 metres deep – Scafell is 978 metres high.
