Rethink Trident – a broad coalition of individuals and organisations against government plans to spend £100bn on a new nuclear weapons system – will launch tomorrow (Wednesday 10 September) at 10.45am in Parliament, with speakers including Caroline Lucas MP, Katharine Hamnett (fashion designer), Diane Abbott MP, John Hilary (War on Want) and CND General Secretary Kate Hudson.

Members of this alliance against Trident replacement include Russell Brand, CND, Thom Yorke, CWU, Annie Lennox, Frankie Boyle, War on Want, Vivienne Westwood, and many more politicians, celebrities, religious figures and civil society actors.

CND’s General Secretary Kate Hudson said:

‘Over the next two years this broad alliance of individuals and organisations is set to be a powerful collective voice against wasting £100bn on a Cold War weapons system, while the NHS and other public services are slashed.

‘People are fed up of being told there’s no money for vital services while the government earmarks £100 billion for new nuclear weapons.

‘Rethink Trident reflects the concerns across society that the government’s priorities are all wrong, and we’re calling on the government to scrap Trident, save £100bn and spend it on the things we really need.’
