National Conference call to action.
Across the country in 2011 Union Conferences will be organising the fight back against the ConDem cuts in public spending. Trident must not be ignored in this debate. The Trident nuclear weapons system costs British taxpayers £2.2bn per year. The Government’s proposed Trident replacement will cost Britain well over £76bn.
Despite these huge sums of money being spent, Trident provides a disproportionately tiny number of jobs. The British economy would benefit hugely from scrapping Trident and its replacement and moving into marine and wind energy instead. This would provide workers in the defence industry with alternative employment as well as working towards the TUC’s call for 1 million climate jobs to be created.
Scrapping Trident would also keep Britain’s commitment to rid the UK of nuclear weapons – something we agreed to as a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It would also send responsible signals to non-nuclear weapon states around the world who may think they too need nuclear weapons.
A bold step is needed. As with the abolition of slavery, Britain could be the country to take the lead and with the economy in such dire straits, the stakes are even higher.
Trade Unions are key in this campaign, as a Trade Unionist you can:
- Pass anti-Trident policy at your Union Branch.
- Get your Branch to affiliate to CND.
- Pass policy at your National Conference.
We must not let the Government waste billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money that could better be spent on jobs, pensions, education and health to improve the lives of the British people without threatening the lives of others.
